Hindi 323A Spring 2009

Final Oral Exam

The final Hindi Oral Exam will be held individually in Prem’s office, Gowen 231, between 11:30-12:20 Thursday, May 28 and 10:30-11:20 Friday, May 29 and will last 10 minutes max.  (The class time on Friday will be used for the exam, if you have signed up for a slot on Thu, no need to come to class Fri). This exam is intended to be a low-stress exercise, an opportunity to have some fun with the material assigned.

For the exam, memorize any one of the two poems handed out in class earlier. (The poems have a Modern Standard Hindi version printed in smaller type to the right, line-by-line, to help you understand the meaning of the poem. No need to memorize this version). For your recital:

·        Strive for a lyrical, rhythmic, heart-felt recitation. (You are welcome to set it to a melody).

o       Recitation example of Sundardās poem spkr

o       Recitation example of Kabīr poem spkr , another version spkr

·        If it may help you, you can use no more than 8 flashcards with English cues. (No romanized Hindi!)

·        Time permitting, you will be asked some simple questions in Hindi on the poem of your choice.

Also turn in, at the time of the Oral Exam, your best poetic English translation. It is suggested that you work on this prior to memorization, as it will aid you in the process.
