Homework Assignments for Weeks 1-3

Assignments marked with the symbol  ! are to be turned in on the day due and will be graded.

For Thursday, October 1. Prepare reading passage गीदड़ गीदड़ ही है (pp. 23-24). Do not panic if you find this material difficult and that it contains much new vocabulary. Use the glossary given at the end of the story to get through the material as best you can. We'll sort things out in class. Notice that some of the vocabulary entries in the glossary have asterisks attached to them. Pay special attention to these words, as they are thought to be part of the "core" vocabulary of Hindi.

For Friday, October 2. Review in Primer, Chapters 2-4 the following material: basic forms of Devanāgarī consonants; basic and post-consonantal forms vowels; formation of consonant clusters; phonetic properties of Hindi consonants; romanization of Devanāgarī; Hindi numerals; alphabetic order of Devanāgarī; Hindi numerals.

For Monday, October 5. ! [HW2a] Based upon the reading passage गीदड़ गीदड़ ही है, answer the following questions in complete Hindi sentences. Come prepared to talk about this story. You will turn in your written answers at the end of class.

(१) गीदड़ का शरीर क्यों नीला हो गया था ?

For Tuesday, October 6. In preparation for a review session on nouns and adjectives, look over in Primer sections 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2, and 16.4. ! [HW2b] In your best Devanāgarī handwriting, COPY the first three paragraphs of the reading passage गीदड़ गीदड़ ही है . This is an exercise in handwriting that is designed to make sure that your written Hindi is legible and that the individual characters are formed correctly. Use pencil and the specially ruled paper that you have been provided.

For Wednesday, October 7. Prepare carefully the reading passage चतुर स्त्री (pp. 24-25).

For Thursday, October 8. In preparation for a review session on pronouns, review in Primer sections 6.3, 7.2, 8.4, 9.3, 9.5, 9.6, 10.2, and 13.3.

For Friday, October 9. ! [HW2c] Team up with two classmates, pick & translate an interesting short news article in Hindi from an online source. Come to class prepared to talk for 5 minutes on the article (in Hindi). Each student turns in their translated portion with the original article.

For Monday, October 12. Study for vocabulary quiz on asterisked words from the readings गीदड़ गीदड़ ही है, चतुर स्त्री. Complete the reading passage चतुर स्त्री. Complete discussion of news articles from Friday, if necessary.

For Tuesday, October 13. Review basic forms of होना (Primer, 6.4, 7.1) ! [HW3a] Based on the reading passage चतुर स्त्री, answer the following questions in complete Hindi sentences:

(१) बढ़ई अपनी पत्नी की परीक्षा क्यों लेना चाहता था ?

For Thursday, October 15. Review habitual and progressive verb forms (Primer, 8.2, 9.1).

For Monday, October 19. Study for vocabulary quiz on asterisked words from the readings गीदड़ गीदड़ ही है, चतुर स्त्री, हृदय और कान रहित गधा + #s 20-40. Prepare carefully the reading passage हृदय और कान रहित गधा (pp. 26-27).
