Homework Assignments for Weeks 4-5

For Monday, October 19.  Study for vocabulary quiz on asterisked words from the readings गीदड़ गीदड़ ही है, चतुर स्त्री, हृदय और कान रहित गधा + #s 20-40. Prepare carefully the reading passage हृदय और कान रहित गधा (pp. 26-27). 


For Tuesday, October 20.
  In preparation for the review session on the perfective and the ने construction, read Primer, sections 10.1 and 11.1.


For Wednesday, October 21.   ! [HW4a] This homework assignment is based on the review of the perfective and the ने  construction and you may need to refer to the vocabulary given in 10.5 and 11.4:  Do in writing Primer exercises 10.6.2 (#7-10) and 11.5.2 (#1-6).   Complete the reading passage हृदय और कान रहित गधा.


For Thursday, October 22.  Dictation. Prepare for oral drills, Q&A based on all the readings from the Jain Hindi Reader completed so far.


For Friday, October 23.   Come to class prepared to discuss (in Hindi) the online news article announced via email. ! [HW4b] Turn in your translation of the news article.   


For Monday, October 26.   Prepare carefully the reading passage करवा चौथ (1 & 2 [pages 36-37])


For Tuesday, October 27.   Vocabulary quiz on asterisked words from the करवा चौथ & भैया दूज readings, #s 40-60.  Review carefully material on the imperative (12.1), subjunctive (13.1), and future (13.2).

 

For Wednesday, October 28.   Dictation. Prepare carefully the reading passage भैया दूज (1 & 2 [pages 37-39])


For Thursday, October 29.  ! [HW5a] Translate the following sentences into Hindi, paying careful attention to the use of appropriate perfective verb forms and the use of the ने construction. [fam. = familiar]

1.       When did your friends arrive from Mumbai (मुंबई)?

2.       Have you (fam.) heard Ravi's (रवि) new song?

3.       His children had never gone to India before (पहले).

4.       You (int.) must have bought some very cheap clothes for me.

5.       When did they do the work for Mr. Jain (श्री जैन)?

6.       Have you (fam.f.) brought anything for her from Pakistan?

7.       He must have given them several very good books.

8.       Their friends (m.) had taken the money from their father's clothes.

9.       She said that today is Monday.

10.   We did not understand what Mr. Pal said (पाल जी की बातें).


For Friday, October 30.

Prepare for individual Oral Exam on the readings done up to now from the Jain Hindi Reader.
