RELIGIOUS GROUPS in 17th Century England

 

SCOTLAND: national presbyterian church
         theologically Calvinist: predestination
         presbyterian organization (no Bishops):
             “presbyters” = elders, laymen
              consistory = morals court made up of
                                   ten presbyters plus minister
               goal = enforcement of Christian disciple

 

ANGLICANS:  state religion, king as head of church
                        episcopal organization (Bishops)
                        priests (married), Mass, sacraments
                        compulsory religious attendance

                        uniformity in services under
                            Book of Common Prayer

PURITANS:

    English Calvinists, many are Anglican preachers
    want Presbyterian national church (Scottish model
    strong in Parliament, House of Commons

 

INDEPENDENTS or CONGREGATIONALISTS

     religious groups who want freedom of religion
     right to establish independent congregations,
              no national church
     more radical than the Presbyterian Puritans
     expand during English Civil War
