Possible Essay topics: there will be two essays out of a choice of four.
Intellectual History: Compare the view of human nature in Pico’s Oration

is the role of humanism in each of these works and how does each reflect the
setting for which it was written?
Florence and Rome: How did the relationship with Papal Rome influence
Florentine politics in the 15 and 16th centuries?
Pick three major persons or events from the rise of Cosimo to the restoration
of the Medici in 1530 and discuss the connections between Florence and Rome.
Medici: How did the

opposition to them during this period.
Why did they lose power in 1494?

historians mean by the “dwarfing of Italy”? How did overall Italian
political situation differ before and after 1494? Consider period from about 1454-1530.
Humanism: How is humanism defined by historians, and
how did humanism help to define the Renaissance in Italy? Give specific examples of at least three
humanist writers discussed in the course, along with a broader discussion of
the goals and methods of humanist learning in the Renaissance era.
