REVIEW SHEET FOR TAKE HOME FINAL EXAM           HSTEU401

This will be an open book exam; you may use books or notes to
organize and prepare outlines and ideas for answers. 

Once you start writing, however, please limit yourself to about
one to one and a half hours per essay, for a maximum of 3 hours
(not necessarily all at one sitting). You may type or handwrite,
whichever is more comfortable for you. You will be asked to
answer two essay questions, one from each section (2 essays per section). 

Exams should be left in O’Neil mailbox in Smith 315 at the latest by
2:30pm on Friday June 8. Leave self addressed stamped envelope to have
your exam and paper mailed, or e-mail Prof. O’Neil after June 8th
I will be in the week of June 11th and can leave specific exams outside
my office, Smith 212A if I know you will be picking them up.

Here are some basic topics to review for the exam.

Each of your two essays must contain at least three
"identifications" of basic persons, events, books, etc,
along
with appropriate dates.  These will form the equivalent of
ID type questions on a regular final.

Rise of the Medici and Medici rule to 1494
How did the Medici come to power, and hold power? What evidence is there of
ongoing opposition to them?  How did they lose power in 1494?

Machiavelli:  how did M’s political experience of events in Italy since
1494 influence his ideas about how to rule a state?
What differences can you see between his version of republican
rule and that of Savonarola?
How have historians explained the difference between M’s political
affiliation with the Republic and his writing of
The Prince?

Political history: What do historians mean by the “dwarfing of Italy”? 
How did overall Italian political situation differ before and after 1494?

Humanism: how is humanism defined and how did humanism help to define the
Renaissance in Italy?  Give specific examples of at least three humanist writers
discussed in the course, along which a broader discussion of the goals and
methods of humanist learning.

Papacy:  Discuss the contributions of three Popes discussed in the
course to the Renaissance in Rome, along with major setbacks and limitations
of papal rule in this period.
