Melanocytes begin to regionalize in the hair peg

Melanocytes are uniformly distributed among the cells of the extending hair peg and now begin to migrate into the hair bulb, where they will be active in melanogenesis.

The image above is a split-slim preparation in which the demis has been removed. The epidermis and it's appendages are now being viewed en face. The dark brown spots between the tubular structures are melanocytes stained with an antibody HMB-45 in interfollicular epidermis. Note how evenly spaced they are. The dark brown spots at the base of the hair follicles are the melanocytes which have localized to this region.
