Risk Factors for Children:
(melanoma is rare in children)

  • Giant congenital melanocytic nevi - dark nevus present at birth, affects large area
  • Xeroderma pigmentosum - autosomal recessive. Characterized by abnormal DNA repair causing exquisite photosensitivity, premature ageing and skin cancer.
  • Maternal gestational melanoma - Mothers who develop melanomas while pregnant can transmit these to fetus.
