READING ON BINARY ARITHMETIC (for lecture Tuesday, October 15)

On Tuesday we’ll continue our discussion of symbols (Aaron Marcus’s article) and begin to discuss the nuts and bolts of binary arithmetic and machine representation.  Please read the discussion of binary arithmetic by Decker, R., & Hirshfield, S.  (1994).  The analytic engine (pp. 172-184).  Note: Pp. 180-184 on encoding instructions (i.e., machine language) are optional but you may find them of interest.
