Why Create a Personal Web Page?

Four Steps To Make Your Own Web Pages

  1. A Place to Store / Display Web Pages
Enable a web directory in your Dante account using the instructions provided by C&C in
Creating a Student Home Page.  You will only do this step once, but you will use the address (url) and directory (public_html) frequently so make a note of them.

  2. CREATE Web Pages Using:

    Word 97 Netscape Composer 4.x
    1. Create a file using the word processor features. (study plan, project, personal list of web sites, etc.)
    2. Save the file as .doc (if you need to produce paper documents).
    3. Also on the File menu is the option 'Save as HTML' (use a slightly different file name).
    4. Electronically transfer the file to Dante account (WS-FTP).  C&C also provides a guide to file transfer.
    1. Open Netscape Communicator (version 4.0 or higher).
    2. From the File menu select 'New Page from Wizard'.  CSSCR provides an instruction handout (this will open the Adobe Acrobat Reader in a separate window - use simultaneously with Netscape).
3.Electronically transfer the file to Dante account (WS-FTP).

  3. Electronically transfer file to your web-space on Dante (public_html directory) using WS-FTP (C&C also provides a guide to file transfer)

  4. EDIT web pages using:
    Word 97 Netscape Composer 4.x
    1. Electronically transfer file from the web site to diskette by opening Netscape/Internet Explorer to your page. From the File Menu select 'Save As'.
    2. Open the Word program.  Open the file you just saved and make changes. Save the file.
    4. Electronically transfer file to Dante using WS-FTP.  Use the same filename and the changed version will write over the earlier version.
    5. Refresh the screen from the Netscape/Internet Explorer button bar and the changes should appear.  Check for errors (typos, broken icons, follow links).
    1. Open Netscape Communicator to your page.
    2. From the File menu, select "Open Page" and type the web address of your page into the dialog box.  It will display in the Netscape window just above the box.
    3. Change "Open location or file in" to COMPOSER.
    4. Notice the PEN in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.  This is how you can tell that you are using Netscape Composer, i.e. web editor, rather than the Netscape Communicator browser (indicated by the ship's steering wheel)
    5. Edit file using Netscape Composer and save the file.
    6. Electronically transfer file to Dante using WS-FTP. Use the same filename and the changed version will write over the earlier version.

Common Problems and How to Solve Them

  1. You moved your web page to Dante but you can't view them with Netscape or Internet Explorer?

  2. You see the broken icon instead of the cool pictures you added to your web page when creating/editing it with a web editor program

Learning HTML Tags

HTML is the formatting 'language' used to create web documents.  Using a web editors like Word, Netscape Composer, Frontpage, Homepage, etc., allows you to create web pages with a program that is similar to a word processor.  If you want to learn the HTML tags themselves, use one of the many tutorials available on the web.
