Microsoft SQL Server Software
We will start using SQL Server in week 5 or 6.
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express with Management Studio Express is "free" to download. You can use the following instructions (follow them exactly) to install the software on a Windows computer or Windows emulator on a MAC.
SQL Server 2008 Express Installation Instructions PDF
Alternative Option: If you choose to
not install the software, there are four SQL servers setup that you can
access remotely from any computer connected to the Internet. These are
shared machines which means only three people can do the labs at one
time. That has not been a problem with past classes because you pick
your lab time 24-7 - but it is a possibility that you could find the
machines busy.

Microsoft Visio 2010 Software
We will start using Visio in week 2 or 3 through week 6.
Microsoft Visio 2010 is "free" to iSchool students at: MSDN Academic Alliance Software Center
If you have trouble getting MS Visio software.
The MSDNAA system uses a unique login and password - not your UW
NetID - and password.
iSchool students: that password was emailed to you when you enrolled
in the program. In addition, if you attended the iSchool
orientation, we passed out an IT orientation handout that described
that login and password in more detail.
Non-iSchool students: The iSchool Help Desk
(iHelp@uw.edu or MGH 330Y) can
help you get an ID and answer your questions.
Here is what you need to do:
- Go to this site to login: MSDN Academic Alliance Software Center
- Click the LOGIN button on the left to login.
- On the right side, there is a dialog box that says "Login Help", and a link to click if you forgot your password.
- Click that link and when asked for your username enter your UW email address, i.e.. xxxx@uw.edu
- Your password will be emailed to you.
- Once you have it go back to the site above, login with your UW email address and enter the password mailed to you. You should then be able to download the program.
The iSchool Help Desk (iHelp@uw.edu) is well versed in helping you order and installing the MSDNAA software.
Note: Visio is in the MGH 4th floor labs, if you prefer.
Mac Users
MAC users note there is no MAC version of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services. You will need to have access to a Windows machine. Most newer Macs can run BootCamp to dual-boot between OS X and Windows. Also many Mac users also already own Parallels or Fusion from VMWare. Both of those options allow them to use run these software tools as well.
