Seattle, known for its music and coffee, is also home to a vibrant tattoo community.
Slave to the Needle, with locations in Ballard and Wallingford, is owned by Aaron Bell, a local tattoo artist whose career began in the 1980’s.
The recipient of more than 60 awards, Bell is one of the most talented tattoo artists in the greater Seattle area.
But what really makes the Ballard shop unique is its own art gallery showcasing tattoo-styled artwork from around the world. Many of the artists in the shop have their own paintings hung on the deep red walls, framed and available for purchase. The gallery is real eye candy, and a place where customers can find inspiration for their tattoos.
“You’re gonna get a good tattoo here, no matter what,” said David Potter, Ballard shop manager of fifteen years.
No longer is tattooing a secretive art; there are dozens of tattoo artists in the Seattle area alone. Local conventions around the country have grown in popularity too. Every year both artists and fans attend the Seattle Tattoo Expo to see new designs and who won the various contests.
“I love what I get to do. It’s a passion that I will do, as long as I physically can I guess,” said Josh Schwegel, a tattoo artist at the Ballard shop.

Nice job, Laura! Another solid story with good pictures and audio. Nicely edited too – tighter than the glassblowing one.
