When customers walk into Guy’s Barber & Style Shop on Northeast 42nd Street in Seattle’s University District, they might feel like nothing has changed in 30 years — and that’s because almost nothing has.

Besides getting a new floor, Guy’s has served many of the same customers for all of its time in this U-District location.

The shop was opened by Guy Massetti — the shop’s namesake — in 1960 and was since taken over by current owner Rick Linder, who started working at the shop in 1975.

“It’s pretty male-oriented here; sports, politics, and there’s a lot of testosterone,” Linder said. “We don’t have to be politically correct as long as we’re gentlemen, right?”

Massetti and Linder formed a close friendship in their time working together, but Massetti now works only Mondays and Linder the rest of the week. Many of Linder’s current customers had their hair cut by Massetti when the shop first opened, and don’t want to see the place change a bit.

“People don’t want me to change this at all,” Linder said. “Even though [we've had] limited change in the last 30 years, other than a new floor. They say ‘no, don’t make it pretentious or that type of thing’ because people come in here just to talk and have a fun time.  … Nobody wants it to change here, which is good. I like that.”
