Students in English 198D identified the following criteria for evaluating drafts of Essay #3.  Refer to this list of criteria as you evaluate each other's essays.  A effective essay will do the following:

Analyze the primary source(s); focus on the sources instead of offering broad historical narrative

Contain a strong thesis

  • thesis presents an argument regarding the historical significance of the source
  • thesis is based on the source; it doesn't simply state a historical truth
Integrate sources into a coherent argument that supports the thesis

Address the historical significance of the source(s) and topic

Demonstrate a sense of the writer's purpose or interest in the topic

Have Logical Organization

  • may be organized chronologically
  • may be organized around points of analysis
Demonstrate a balance between references to source material and interpretation of that material
  • balance will be toward analysis, with each description, summary, paraphrase or quotation interpreted
  • writers can present evidence regarding the language, structure, and images of the source
Meet length requirements
  • in evaluating one another's essays, we will concentrate on helping writers to expand their arguments
Properly cite and introduce source material
