Criteria for Evaluating
Essay #3 Drafts
Students
in English 198D identified the following criteria for evaluating drafts
of Essay #3. Refer to this list of criteria as you evaluate each
other's essays. A effective essay will do the following:
Analyze
the primary source(s); focus on the sources instead of offering broad historical
narrative
Contain
a strong thesis

presents an argument regarding the historical significance of the source

thesis
is based on the source; it doesn't simply state a historical truth
Integrate
sources into a coherent argument that supports the thesis
Address
the historical significance of the source(s) and topic
Demonstrate
a sense of the writer's purpose or interest in the topic
Have
Logical Organization

may be
organized chronologically

may be
organized around points of analysis
Demonstrate
a balance between references to source material and interpretation of that
material

balance
will be toward analysis, with each description, summary, paraphrase or
quotation interpreted

writers
can present evidence regarding the language, structure, and images of the
source
Meet length
requirements

in evaluating
one another's essays, we will concentrate on helping writers to expand
their arguments
Properly
cite and introduce source material
