Homework Assignment 9:  Ranking and Analysis of Sample Papers

Read the sample essays from Dr. Singh's last HST AA 135 class and my autumn writing link.  Both classes had to develop historical arguments around a primary source or sources.

For Friday, February 25, write a one-page analysis of the papers that contains the following components:

1) Note how successfully each writer has developed and supported a persuasive historical argument.  In your description, indicate one specific example of how each paper effectively builds an argument.  For example, do the writers analyze evidence well?  Clearly relate the primary source to the historical context?

2) Explain what each writer could have done more effectively.

3) Describe the extent to which these papers have given you an idea of how to approach Essay #3.  What about these papers do you plan to emulate?  What do you plan to avoid?

4) Rank each paper according to the scale below and explain the reasons for your ranking:

5 = Excellent 4 = Strong 3 = Adequate  2 = Fair 1 =  Poor
5) Specify any questions you have about the papers or the approach the writer took to the assignment.
