Passage Analysis Exam Grading and Scale
Exam Grading Criteria
Each passage analysis was worth ten points.
I graded the analyses on the following criteria:
-
Focus—the writer provided an opening statement
about the elements of the poem he or she would address and the function
of those elements; the following paragraph(s) focused on the elements listed
in the opening sentence.
-
Development and Support—the writer developed
his or her argument about the function of language, tone, or form, providing
specific examples from the poem or essay; the writer provided a balance
between analysis and textual citation, explaining each reference to the
text.
-
Complexity—the writer interpreted the text
rather than summarizing.
-
Clarity—the writer’s sentences were understandable.
