Linguistics 567: Grammar Engineering
Preparation for Lab 5
The preparation for last week's lab also covers what we need
for this week. Here's last's weeks prep instructions:
- Explore how different illocutionary forces are
expressed in your language. How do matrix declaratives
differ from matrix interrogatives and imperatives?
- Explore how embedded clauses appear in your language,
for declaratives and interrogatives. Are there complementizers or
other particular morphemes that are required? Do they appear
at the beginning or end of the embedded clause? Does the
verb change inflection? [For simplicity, you can focus just
on finite embedded clauses that are complements of verbs. Try
to avoid raising/control constructions, and go for complete clauses.]
- Find a few examples of verbs that embedded clauses, and explore
which clause types they can appear with
(declarative/interrogative/imperative).
Be sure that you have collected the above information for polar
interrogatives (yes-no questions) and imperatives.
