Isopods
Subclass: Malacostraca
Order: Isopoda
Many isopods are parasitic on larger crustaceans or fish.
They have wide flattened bodies with 7 pairs of legs.
Their back's are covered with a series of armor like plates.
Isopods can be found on land and in water.
They can be found in eelgrass, under cobble, and rocks at the edge of the tide pool.
Rockweed Isopod
Idotea wosnesenskii
This isopod can be found on seaweeds or under rocks. They eat algae and can range from green, red to brown in color.
They can easily be identified by the rounded tip of their abdomen. I found this isopod on the eelgrass at Willapa Bay, under a rock at Cattle Point-San Juan Island
and under a rock at Olympic National Park north of Hole in the Wall.
