Seaweeds and Seagrasses

Green Seaweeds - Chlorophyta

 

World wide there are 7000 estimated seaweeds, 4000 microalgae and 50 seagrasses.  Here in the Pacific Northwest we have an estimated 700 of these species making our area one of the richest in seaweed biodiversity in the world.  (Harbo, 1999)

Usually bright green in color there are approximately 90 species of green seaweeds in the Pacific Northwest. They have delicate looking and translucent blades ranging from broad to fine hair like strands which typically are not more then a cell or two thick.  Green seaweeds are commonly found in a variety of habitats ranging from fresh water streams and springs to salt water tide pools. They are able to tolerant of a wide range of water salinities and fresh water dilution.
