Home Tidepool Snailfish

This wonderful image of a tidepool snailfish was found at fishbase.org

Vital Signs:

Scientific Name: Liparis florae

Range: These fish can be found from Alaska all the way down to Point Conception, CA

Length: Up to about 4 inches. The only example I was able to find was a juvenile about 1.5 inches in length.

Habitat: These fish generally prefer a rocky substrate. The sample that we found was in that type of environment. From external reports, I have learned that these fish prefer to cling under rocks with their modified pectoral fins.

Fun Fish Fact: These fish have evolved a modified pectoral fin that they use a a sucker to maintain their hold on the underside of rocks.
