READINGS
I’ll be posting the required readings to this course
website at least a week prior to each class. They'll be
listed on each specific week's webpage, linked
to a restricted site
-- you'll need
your UW ID to log in for copyright reasons.
We will draw considerably upon Yochai Benkler’s
The
Wealth of Networks (2006 Yale University Press)
PDF also available for download here.
You can also find it at the University
Bookstore.

Here are two
good critiques of Benkler, which also help summarize some
of his ideas, which are both on the restricted site:
The Commons Manifesto: Peering
into Benkler’s “Wealth of
Networks,"Kas Kalba (Intermedia,
Autumn 2006).
Wealth Without
Markets, Lior Jacob Strahlilevitz
(The Yale Law Journal, 2007) -- listed as "Benkler Critique
PDF" in Readings list.
I have also uploaded PDF’s for two chapters from Henry
Jenkins excellent Convergence
Culture (2006 New York University
Press).
At some point, I recommend that you read it in its
entirety.
For each class, you’ll be required to bring the URL to at
least one news item or posting on UGC from the past seven
days for class discussion. As a starting point, I suggest
you consult the following sites:
www.techmeme.com
www.lostremote.com
For the final assignment, The
New Influencers: A Marketer’s Guide to the New Social
Media by Paul Gillin (2007 Quill
Driver Books) could be helpful.
