Energy & Environment II

HW#5

Due, Friday, February 8, 2002

1. (75%) Your task is to perform initial analysis on a solar thermal electric power plant for the Phoenix, AZ area. That is, your task is to determine how big the plant will need to be to reach the project goal for electricity produced.

Most days in Phoenix are sunny or mostly sunny. The power plant must be capable of producing at least 800 MWH (megawatt-hours) of electricity from the sun on each of these sunny and mostly sunny days. The power plant must be capable of operating in all months of the year.

Determine the size of the power plant. That is, determine the total aperture area of the collectors. Provide a drawing (or a sketch clearly drawn) of the power plant, identifying all of its major parts. State all assumptions used, and clearly show your analysis and calculations. (Any HW sloppily done will be returned without a grade.) Provide a calculation of the receiver temperature and overall efficiency of the power plant for peak sun on a day that just meets the 800 MWH goal.

2. (25%) What are organic photovoltaic cells, and why they receiving interest?
