TITLE:
"Remote Monitoring of Human Movement"
ABSTRACT:
The analysis of human movement has traditionally been conducted in
biomechanics
laboratories where a few steps of gait or other movements have been
studied to
characterize pathology or rehabilitation status. The advent of
wearable sensors
with on-board data storage or a wireless connection to a smartphone has
opened
new possibilities for more ecologically valid monitoring of people in
their own
environments. This seminar will discuss three such applications
from the fields of
sports medicine, rehabilitation from knee joint replacement, and
exercise during
space travel. Machine learning adds a new dimension to such monitoring
because
it allows recognition of specific activities from a parsimonious data
set. A live
demonstration of one of the applications will be presented.
