"Biomechanics of Metal on Metal Hip Replacement-Fact, Fiction and What You Don't See on TV"


ABSTRACT:

Much has been said recently about the performance of artificial hips with Metal on Metal
(MOM) articulations, and the science behind them.  With a battle being fought in the court of
public opinion, as well as in the state and federal courts, this talk will provide background
to the history of total hip arthroplasty with hard on hard bearings. We will recap the science
and engineering of biotribology, upon which MOM bearings design and testing are based. A review
of recent MOM multigenerational clinical results will also be discussed.
