- 1/18/08 - The text is inconsistent (in several places, unfortunately) on the work sign convention.
When writing conservation of energy for a closed system as Q + W = change in E system,
Work done by the surroundings on the system is "work in" -> positive
Work done by the system on the surroundings is "work out" -> negative
This applies of course for boundary work or any other work term.
(Q into the system is positive, Q out is negative)
Expanding the heat and work terms as follows should help to minimize
confusion:
