ABOUT THE SITE
General: Medical students are expected to spend five days per week at the office of Dr. David Greeley unless the clinic is closed (one-half to one day per week). Clinic typically runs from 9AM to 5PM.
The best place to park is on the street near the office building (507 S. Washington, Spokane, WA). There are many spots not requiring a meter and within a block of the office.
Students will have free and unlimited access to the internet through an internal wireless network.
It would be helpful for each student to have an ID badge and white coat or clean scrubs. All the necessary medical equipment is available in each exam room.
Faculty: During the four weeks you will work with both providers in our neurology practice.

Dr. Greeley is the clerkship site director. He will observe the student’s performance of the neurological examination within the first two weeks of the rotation, and provide feedback. Hopefully, this will happen in the last two weeks, as well, to ensure mastery of the neurological examination. The clinical mini-CEX should be performed with Dr. Greeley. Kim Walter is the clinic coordinator who has control of the schedules and is a good resource. Please tell the site director if you have any specific goals for the month so that your experience is as good as possible.
Inpatient experience: Our neurology group does not have an inpatient service and the students will have no responsibilities for call-coverage or hospital work.
Clinic experience:
A combination of three different learning models will be employed in clinic. In the autonomous model, the student sees the patient first and then presents to the preceptor. In the shadow model, the student will follow the preceptor and observe different patient interaction styles. The final model allows the student to evaluate the patient, but in the presence of the preceptor, which definitely provides the opportunity for the most thorough feedback. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Other opportunities include programming of Deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes as well as observing Botox/Myobloc injections, occipital nerve blocks, nerve conduction studies, EMG’s and lumbar punctures. Experience with a neurorehabiliation team (PT, OT, Speech therapy), neurosurgeon, neuropharmacologist, pediatric neurologist, neuroradiologist, neuro-ophthalmologist, and/or neuropsychologist can potentially be arranged during the month with advance request.
