Immunization records:
You'll need to bring proof of immunization, including TB.
If you do not have a copy of your immunization records, you
can request a copy from Hall Health or the Employee Health
Office in UWMC.
TRAVEL,
HOUSING & COMPUTER ACCESS
Housing: Shared housing is in two-bedroom
apartments. Contact Nancy Granlund before your arrival for
information about picking up a key and other details about
the housing at 509-474-4966 or poodles349@aol.com.
Travel: If you drive, you will receive mileage
reimbursement for one roundtrip to and from Spokane. Contact

WHAT
TO BRING & ORIENTATION
Equipment to bring: White coat and name
tag, reflex hammer, tuning fork (128Hz), stethoscope, (ophthalmoscope
recommended).
First day & site orientation: Contact
Dr. Clark's office to find out when and where to arrive on
your first day. A photo ID must be worn at all times in the
work places. Office hours are from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through
Friday.

Learning page. You will need to refer to your Pocket Syllabus
(see below) when viewing the video.

COURSE
REQUIREMENTS
Course requirements are listed below. Refer to the Distance
Learning page for due dates.
Cases: Two case write-ups are due each week.
Further information is available in the orientation video
and on the Cases page. Your
assigned case numbers are on the Distance
Learning page. Please note that your assigned case numbers
are different than for the Seattle-based students. Weekly
case answers and video lectures will be available on the Distance
Learning page on Thursdays after 1PM.
Patient log: You are required to log in
the patients you have seen each week. The log is described
in the clerkship orientation video. Additional details are
on the Patient Log page.
Clinical & Bioethical Mini-CEX exercises: You
are required to do both a clinical and a bioethical mini-CEX
for this course. See the Mini-CEX
page for details.
Presentations: Presentation requirements
are described in the orientation video and are available on
the Presentations page.
Final exam: Your final exam will be held
in the Spokane WWAMI office, usually on the final day of the
clerkship. Contact Janie Ford at the Spokane WWAMI office
as soon as possible to coordinate your exam time at 509-747-7211

ABOUT
THE SITE
Dr. Robert Clark is a graduate of the University of Washington
School of Medicine and a board certified neurologist in practice
for 29 years on the north side of Spokane, WA. His practice
is general neurology in an office with two other neurologists.
The office serves a large referral area including Spokane
County, extending to the Canadian border and northern Idaho.
The outpatient practice sees a great variety of acute and
chronic neurological disorders in patients from late childhood
to old age. Common problems include neuropathic disorders
affecting peripheral and spinal nerves, episodic disorders
such as migraine and epilepsy. Neurodegenerative disorders,
some inherited, are commonly seen. Other services include
EEG, evoked potentials and electrodiagnosis, as well as Botox
injection for dystonia and other disorders. Imaging services
including CT, MRI, PET and general radiology are readily available.
Interventional radiology is available at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The primary hospital work is at Holy Family Hospital in north
Spokane. Holy Family has the busiest emergency department
in Eastern Washington with over 60,000 visits per year. Dr.
Clark’s office provides inpatient neurological services,
including hospital admission and consultation for acute neurological
disorders. There is an active inpatient stroke service with
protocols for treatment of acute stroke with TPA. A protocol
for defining prognosis in post cardiac arrest coma is in place
and they are in the process of introducing therapeutic hyperthermia
for post cardiac arrest coma. Other inpatient disorders include
treatment of epilepsy including status epilepticus, acute
neuropathic disorders such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, encephalopathies
and other disorders resulting in an acute change in mental
status. There is an active neurosurgery service at Holy Family.
Dr. Clark’s office provides weekend call coverage for
the other acute care hospitals including Sacred Heart Hospital,
Deaconess and Valley Hospital and Medical Center every fifth
weekend. Hospital call is taken on a weekly basis for each
neurologist in the office.
Dr. Clark is the chair of the Ethics Committee at Holy Family
Hospital where he provides ethical case consultations having
to do with end of life care, ethical issues and conflicts
that occur in the inpatient hospital setting.
