Clerkship Director and Skills Assessment: Dr. Lily Jung is the clerkship site director. She will observe students’ neurological examination skills within the first two weeks of the rotation and provide feedback. To ensure mastery of the neurological examination a second observation may be conducted before the end of the month.
Evaluation Schedule:
Week 1: First neurological examination observation (Dr. Jung)
Week 3: Mini-CEX is conducted
Week 4: Second neurological examination observation. End of rotation feedback. (Dr. Jung)
The clinical mini-CEX can be performed with any of the clinic preceptors. Dr. Jung is a good resource for scheduling this.
Clerkship Schedule:
The medical student clerkship at Swedish Neuroscience Institute is composed of:
- 2 weeks of outpatient neurology clinics
- 2 weeks of inpatient consultations
- 2 key neuroscience conferences each week (attendance required)
Brain Tumor Board (SNI Large Conference Room, James Tower, 5th floor) Mondays 7:30-8:30 AM
SNI Grand Rounds (Swedish Conference Center, James Tower, 1st floor) Thursdays 7:30-8:30 AM
Outpatient Clinic Rotation: Clinic schedules will be set by Dr. Jung on the first day of the rotation. Students will see a combination of new and follow-up patients with a wide variety of neurological illnesses. After initial independent evaluation, the student will present the patient to the staff neurologist, and then see the patient with the staff neurologist. Students may be expected to dictate a template-driven note about each patient encounter. Depending on preference of the neurologist, some patient encounters may be conducted with the student shadowing the staff.
Other training opportunities include observation of procedures including EMG, EEG, evoked potentials, and lumbar puncture.
Clinic runs from 8 AM to 5 PM. There are no weekend or night clinic responsibilities.
Inpatient Rotation: SNI Neurology conducts a busy inpatient consultation service, with approximately 5 new consults per day. Consults are requested on a large number of patients with suspected acute stroke, but a wide range of neurological disorders are seen on this service. The team is lead by Dr. Todd Czartoski and Dr. William Likoksy. Students round with the consult team and see 1-3 new consults each day as well as following several inpatients during the two week rotation. Beginning in September of 2009, students will also work on the new neurology admitting service.
