ORIENATION, FIRST DAY & WHAT TO BRING
Clerkship orientation: Orientation is at
the UW at 8:00AM on the first day of your clerkship. The room
number is on the Didactics
page. Room information may change at
the end of each rotation, so be sure to check the table the
weekend before you begin.
After orientation: Report to 4 NE Nurses
Station. Check in with the residents. The clerkship coordinator
will email the residents' names and pager numbers to you.
Equipment to bring: White coat and name
tag, reflex hammer, tuning fork (128Hz), stethoscope, (Ophthalmoscope
recommended).
SITE EXPECTATIONS
General: Students are expected to spend four and one-half days per week in the University Hospital and Clinics. One-half day is reserved for Thursday didactics at UW.
The dress code for men is a pressed shirt and slacks. Ties are frequent, but not universal. No jeans, T-shirts or tennis shoes. The dress code for women is pants, skirt or dress. Tops should be dressy. Avoid low-cut shirts and dresses, or showing your stomach.
Wear your ID badge at all times.

Dr. Kraus is the clerkship site director. The clinical mini-CEX can be performed with any of the above faculty. Please tell the ward attending if you have any specific goals for the month so that your experience is as good as possible.
CLINIC EXPERIENCE
Inpatient experience:
The majority of your time will be spent on the inpatient service either as the ward student or consult student. The student is expected to follow their assigned patients from time of admission/consultation until discharge or the resolution of the consult issue, write daily progress notes, and be involved in writing medication, laboratory and diagnostic testing orders. A reasonable guideline is to follow 1-3 patients at any time. There are no weekend or night call responsibilities.
Clinic experience: In most instances, the student will be given autonomy to work up new patients in clinic, and shadow the preceptor for return patients. However, be open for variation. The goal is two ½-day clinics per week. Other opportunities include observing/reading EMGs, EEGs, and evoked potentials. Clinics run from 8AM to noon, or 1PM to 5PM. There are no weekend or night clinic responsibilities.
