Case Studies

These four case studies will be the framework for classroom discussion and student evaluation. Each student will be responsible for individually completing each case study.

Please see the syllabus for the dates that each case will be discussed.  Each student will be part of a group that will be responsible for presenting one case and leading the discussion about the case.  Presenters will:

  • Briefly outline the pertinent information in the case.
  • Present growth or weight gain grids.
  • Present analysis of food records, lab tests, and anthropometric data.
  • Lead an interactive discussion of the about each case that includes responses to the questions included with each case description and is designed to provoke energetic class discussions about issues associated with the case that are open to differences of opinion and interpretation.
  • Students are expected to submit copies of drafts of the case studies before the dates that the cases are discussed in class. Students will be able to submit final copies of the cases one week after the case is discussed in class. Failure to turn in assignments on time will result in a 10 point deduction from the total score.

Students are expected to provide up-to-date, evidence-based references to support answers to each of the case questions. Suggested references are listed at the end of each case study.  The group making the presentation about the case is encouraged to go beyond these basic references to explore current thinking about issues raised by the cases.

Drafts of all case studies must be submitted before the start of class on the day that the case is presented using dropbox.  The dropbox will close at 12:30 pm. Students will have one week after the presentation day to submit a final case report.  For the final versions of cases 1 and 2, the dropbox submission will close at 5:00 pm on the due date.  You will be notified when grades and comments on the paper are available to you.

You will find the dropbox listed in your personal Catalyst Web Tools account screen.
