Ocean Policy Work Group Update
The Washington Ocean Policy Work Group held its third meeting of 2006 in Olympia, WA on March 24. With the legislative session over, attendance at the meeting was very high and three hours of discussion took place. The central focus of the meeting was planning for the public outreach program, scheduled to take place between mid-May and the end of June, 2006. The meeting report below includes a summary of these discussions, along with next steps for the outreach program planning. The next OPWG meeting is Friday, April 28, from 9am-12noon in the Main Legislative Building, House Rules Room.

Governance Update
Note: We hope to track the most active States in ocean policy. We are currently tracking numerous State ocean policy developments. The following are selected examples, and we hope to continue to include further examples in future issues. If you have specific updates on State activities, please contact the newsletter (see left).
Oregon
The last Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Committee meeting occurred on March 17th, in Tilamook, OR. Among the topics discussed were an operating procedure / consensus process, updated OPAC membership, as well as a workplan and timeline for a national marine sanctuary proposal. View Governor Kulongoski's request to have the Oregon Coast named a National Marine Sanctuary.
California
The California Ocean Protection Council held public workshops in March to discuss their draft strategic plan. Written comments for the plan were due March 29, in preparation for the next Ocean Protection Council Meeting on April 20 in Sacramento, CA. The agenda for the April 20 meeting is now available. The California Ocean Protection Council has recently announced the creation of a Executive Ocean Policy Officer position, which will report to the Council Chair and will be the primary policy analyst for the OPC. More information on this position can be found here.
California continues to work on its ecosystem-based management initiative. Find the January 27, 2006 memorandum here. The conference "California and the World Ocean ’06: Implementing California’s Vision for Ocean and Coastal Protection" will take place September 17-20, 2006 in Long Beach, CA. The CWO '06 website is now online.
Florida
The Florida Ocean and Coastal Resources Council had its latest meeting on March 13 & 14. A summary report of the meeting, the agenda, public comment guidelines, a status report, funding strategies, and next steps were all discussed. The next Oceans and Coastal Resources Council meeting is scheduled for April 18-20, in Tallahassee, FL. For more information, please visit the Florida Ocean and Coastal Resources Council hompage.

Senate Subcommittee on Ocean Policy to hold Aquaculture Hearing
On April 6 the Senate Commerce Committee's National Ocean Policy Study Subcommittee held a hearing to discuss offshore aquaculture. The testimony transcripts of this hearing are available on the Senate Commerce Committee hearings homepage. A video of the hearing is also available online.
TCS 20: The Coastal Society Conferece May 14-17
The 20th Coastal Society Conference is taking place in St. Petersburg, FL on May 14-17. Numerous topics relating to coastal and ocean management will be discussed, with presentations from a wide range of coastal management experts. Workshops and field trips around the region will also take place. A draft schedule for the conference has been released. The deadline for early registration is Thursday April 20.
