NME421 Assignment
NME
421 students are presenting research or laboratory in Nanoscience,
Nanotechnology and/or Molecular Engineering at the UW Undergraduate Research
Symposium
Location
and date: Friday, May 17 2019 in
Mary Gates Hall
** Instruction provided in January to you**
Dear potential NME 421 (Spring
Quarter) Students,
If you plan to enroll in NME
421 for the Spring Quarter, please read the following very carefully, as it is
very time sensitive and will directly influence your NME 421 grade. If
you are not planning to enroll in NME 421, you can ignore this email.
As mentioned in NME 221 and NME
321, a component of NME 421 is presenting your research to the UW community.
This involves you presenting your research in poster format at the UW
Undergraduate Research Symposium. The Symposium will be held on Friday,
May 19th in Mary Gates Hall. Participating
in the Symposium requires that you submit an abstract by the deadline of Tuesday
February 13th. Below we’ve provided an outline
of the NME 421 abstract requirements that goes beyond the
requirements you find on the Symposium’s website (http://www.washington.edu/undergradresearch/symposium/).
I. Your abstract should contain
the following 4 sections:
BACKGROUND
METHODS
RESULTS
CONCLUSIONS
These
sections should not be divided
visually in the abstract into Background/Methods/Results/Conclusion, but provide a single flowing abstract
that addresses these four point in the order presented without “naming” them.
Each section should be about 75 words maximum. This brings the total word count
to below 300 words.
Also your
abstract should not be written in the “future tense”
Examples:
Do NOT
write: “I anticipate a change in a particular property X due to nanoconfinement, but I do not know at this point for sure.”
INSTEAD
write: “The effect of nanoconfinement on property X
is discussed as function of ......”
It would
be best to speak with your advisor to get recommendations on what you should
focus your poster on and what span of research can be accomplished in the given
time frame (by this May).
II. Upon completion, send the abstract to your research
professor (called “mentor” for the
Symposium) for approval/revision prior to submission.
III. Following your professor’s approval login to: http://expo.uw.edu/expo/apply/446
to submit your abstract and application.
** If you see a page requesting an
invitation code please reference the passage with the asterisks at the bottom
of the page.
IV. Once you’ve clicked on the
application you will need to enter the following:
V. Your mentor will get an
email with a link asking them to log in to
the application system to approve the abstract or send it back to you
for more revisions. Of course it will save you a lot of time and result in a
better abstract if you can go over it with your mentor ahead of time,
preferably in person (see requirement II).
VI. Send a copy of your
abstract to me on the same day you submit it to the Symposium ( nanoadvs@uw.edu
) .
For general abstract guidelines,
you can visit http://www.washington.edu/undergradresearch/symposium/application-info/
.
There are also a series of
information sessions and abstract writing workshops starting this week that are
great for students who have never written an abstract before. The
dates/times can be found at: http://www.washington.edu/undergradresearch/workshops/abstracts/
.
If you want to look ahead a bit,
you can check out the Symposium Participants section of the website or the
Symposium FAQs at: http://www.washington.edu/undergradresearch/symposium/faq/
.
**TROUBLESHOOTING***
**If you have an on-campus job or
scholarship, the system may log you in as "Staff" and requests and
“invitation code.” If this occurs follow the steps below:
1. Log out of the EXPO system
2. Close all browser windows
3. Re-try the application sign-in before logging in to any other UW sites.
If you have any questions
pertaining to the abstract or requirements please contact me (
nanoadvs@uw.edu ). If you have
issues with the application website, you may contact urp@uw.edu
