TOPICS

Topics must be discussed with an instructor well in advance of the outline due date, and should focus on an unknown or controversial issue in biology, ethics, politics, economics, etc. (or several of the above!!) related to global or public health. However, do not select a topic from the topics suggested for panel discussions. If you need some help with choosing a topic, talk to Marilyn (marilyn.parsons@sbri.org) or Sheila (lukehart@u.washington.edu).

SUGGESTED ORGANIZATION:

  • Use headings or subcategories to clarify the organization of your paper
  • Introduction: statement of the topic/problem/question
  • Background: review the relevant literature
  • Text: address the specific topic of your paper, discussing areas of agreement or disagreement in the literature. This should be an in-depth analysis. Synthesize and critically evaluate the information that you present—don't simply regurgitate published studies. This section might logically be divided into several subcategories.
  • Conclusions and future directions: What's known and not known about your topic. Where should future research lead?
  • References/Literature cited: Cite sources numerically according to order of citation, using the format for J. Immunology. Examples are given below.
