Autumn 2007
Student Panels Presentation formats
Here are some ideas for the format of the student panels on controversial topics in public health. In each case, all students in the group will have to do research in the area and your roles should be coordinated with one another. Your grade will be based on content, knowledge, and presentation. Each student will be graded separately. The total time allocated for speaking should be about 30 minutes so that there can be 10 minutes of questions and discussion. You may use overheads or a powerpoint for opening remarks. If you are using powerpoint please put all presentation in one file on a computer or email it to Carmen by noon the preceding day. Debate. Three roles: pro, con, moderator. The Moderator gives a brief introduction to the topic. Pro and con give opening statements and can use overheads or audiovisuals. The Moderator will prepare relevant questions to ask, and then, each person gets a given time to respond with rebuttals at the moderators choice. Moderator may ask for clarification. Could have a closing statement. Moderator allows questions from audience just prior to closing statements (if they decide to have closing statements). Easily adapted to two people with pro and con. Different roles. People with different roles present their view of the question. For example, the military, the doctor, the taxpayer. They could each have an opening statement that lays out their concerns and opinions. They could then each ask the other two a question from "their point of view". Students can then ask questions.
