Waiting List: Psych 209 Winter 2015

Last Updated:  Fri, Jan 9, 1:30 pm

How Your Priority Number is Determined:

Lecture Day 1 (Monday Jan 5) after-class sign-ups have higher priority than Lecture Day 2 sign-ups; Lecture Day 2 = higher priority than Lecture Day 3, and so on.

Within each day, you were grouped first by Senior > Juniors > Sophomores > Freshmen. Within each group your priority was determined randomly. Everyone has good reasons to justify their request to be in the course, so random assignment is the only fair way to do this.

Nonmatriculated students: You priority numbers are last on the list, even if you signed up on Day 1 and matriculated students sign up on later dates.  However, if you do get an add code, then you are in the course and if matriculated students sign up after that, you will not be bumped out of the course.

Odds of Getting In:

I simply can't predict how many students -- if any at all -- will drop this class or will sign up on the wait. Some years only a couple of students drop, whereas other years about 10 do. ALSO, some students on the waiting list decide to enroll in other courses, or are not present in our class when their name is "called" for an add code. This essentially "moves up" students who are further down the list in priority. Thus, sometimes, students far down on the list do get in the course.

HOW TO FIND OUT IF THERE IS AN OPENING: COME TO CLASS

1. Before the start of lecture, and again at the end of class, I will post the names of students who receive Add Codes on the overhead projectors in our classroom.

2. Late afternoon Wednesday and Friday, I will post updates as to who has been given an add code or has been crossed off the list.

3. Each add code is for a specific lab/quiz section time...and you will expected to attend at that time. DO NOT accept an add code and then expect to switch to a different time once you're in the course, because it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to switch. If you cannot make that time then you can "Pass" on that add code -- I will give it to the next person on the waiting list -- and you will retain your priority if another add code becomes available.

If You Don't Get In:

If you absolutely have to take Psych 209 this winter (e.g., to graduate), then check with the Psychology Advising Office to see if it is available as a distance learning course . Otherwise, you will need to try to enroll in the course in Spring. In the past, Psych 209 also has been taught in the summer, and it usually does not fill up in the summer.

VERY IMPORTANT: READ THIS:

NOTE: EVEN IF THE TIME SCHEDULE MAKES IT APPEAR AS IF THERE IS AN OPENING IN A PARTICULAR SECTION, THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY THE CASE. A STUDENT MAY HAVE BEEN GIVEN AN ADD CODE BUT NOT USED IT YET.

ATTENDING LABS ON Tuesday:

IF your number on the priority list is 1 to 10, you may attend lab this Tuesday if you wish, as follows:

If your priority number is 1 to 3, then attend:
9:30 Section AC, MGH 044 OR 10:30: section AE, MGH 044    OR  11:30 section, AF, MGH 044

If your priority number is 4 through 6, then attend:
8:30: section AB, MGH 044    OR   11:30: section AG, MGH 030 OR 12:30 section AH, MGH 030

DO NOT attend any of the labs in SAV 117.

If you attend, this does not affect your probability of getting into the course; you still may not get in. If you get into the course, the odds are that you would end up at a different time and section. You should inform the TA that you are not enrolled in the course yet, but are on the waiting list.

If your number is 11 or higher, do not attend labs.  It is possible that you may still get into the course, but we can't have the labs flooded with many extra students. If you eventually enroll in the course you will be able to download a copy of the homework #1 assignment from the Canvas course website; it will be posted on the Canvas course website by the end of Wednesday afternoon.

READ THIS: ATTENDING DISCUSSION SECTIONS ON Thursday:

1. Under NO circumstance should you go to section AG at 11:30 or AH at 12:30, because PAR 213 only has seats for 25 students. You will be asked to leave.
2. You MAY ATTEND section AA, AB, AC, and AD.
3. Section AE at 10:30 (held in Guthrie Hall basement, Room 57) and AF at 11:30 have enough seats, BUT...students will be doing small-group work in this Thursday's section. Because most people on the Wait List usually try to go at 10:30 or 11:30, then the TA may have to ask you to leave, because adding two small groups will make it too difficult for the TA to give adequate attention to all the groups. THEREFORE, try to attend section AA, AB, AC, AD, if you can, and AE or AF only as a last resort.

Again, if too many students attend a section at the same time, some will be asked to leave. In general, 10:30 and 11:30 are the most popular time slots, so your odds may be better if you go to one of the sections at 8:30 or 9:30.

Attending a section does not guarantee that you will be able to get into the course.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: If it is possible to attend a lab or discussion section,THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU WILL GET INTO THE COURSE.  It might end up being a wasted hour for you.  However, I'm saying you can attend a lab or section if you wish as your priority numbers are the highest ones on the list.
