Frontiers in Nanotechnology is the core
course for the Nanotechnology
Dual Ph.D. Program. The course is aimed at current or potential
Dual Degree students from the 10 participating departments in the NT
Dual Degree program (Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering,
Materials Science and Engineering, Bioengineering, Electrical
Engineering, Microbiology, Physiology and Biophysics, Genome Sciences
and Biochemistry). Other graduate students or senior
undergraduates interested in an
introduction to nanotechnology are quite welcome.
Announcements
- 3/28 Registered
students should receive an email inviting you to take the WebQ
survey,
and also be able to access the class GoPost,
where
lecture
notes
will
be posted. If you think you should have access, but don't, please
email Prof. Olmstead.
- 3/26 Students who
do not need to take this course for a decimal grade should register for
Physics 576 B, which will be graded CR/NC. Students who need
graded credits in Arts & Sciences should register for Chemistry 560
A; students who need graded credits in Engineering should register for
Bioengineering 599 T. Undergraduates should sign up for Phys 428
B, which is also graded CR/NC, but on a different scale for CR than the
graduate class [grad students must do the equivalent of a 3.3 to
receive CR, so that this class can count for the Nanotechnology Dual
PhD Degree.]
- 3/26 The Chem 560
class is currently listed as CR/NC. A request has been submitted
to change this to numeric (standard) grading.

Course Overview
This class is
the core required course for UW's
Nanotechnology
Dual
Degree
Ph.D.
Program. The course is designed to
give an overview of nanotechnology, with emphasis on activities at the
University of Washington. Roughly half the class periods will be
presentations by UW faculty in the Center for Nanotechnology discussing
research on campus. The first three weeks will address background
core
material common to many aspects of nanoscale science and
technology. The remaining classes will be spent addressing
connections between nanotechnology research and society (tech transfer,
ethics, products, etc.).
The course is open to all graduate students and advanced
undergraduates. It is aimed at graduate students starting their
research in UW's nanotechnology Ph.D. program.
