  • For Jan 8:  Stories of Individual Scientists:  Their Lives and Contributions

  • Use the MacLachlan article as the frame to think about the individual narratives you research.  What issues does MacLachlan identify?  Are these evident in the lives of the scientists your research?  In the stories of Hammonds or Gamble?  Are there issues (positive or negative) present in the women and minority scientist's lives that are/ are not mentioned by MacLachlan?  What does that tell us about different methods of data collection?  Based on the data presented by these readings, are there any assertions you would feel comfortable making about the lives of women in science? Finally, have you seen evidence of any of these issues in your own experiences in science education?  Or scientific/engineering work?

  • Kate Quinn was the lead person at UW for implementing a Sloan-funded program called Balance@UW, on work-life balance policies and their usage.  She suggests the following readings.  She would like you to think about how effective you think the sort of competition that Sloan organized is for changing policy and/or climate.  Also, does it matter is schools have policies if everyone is afraid to use them?  Is the benchmarking data from the Sloan study associated with the competition (we had to do this survey as part of the application, and only those who already showed a strong commitment would get funded) meaningful?  If so, what does it mean?
