About Bioscience Careers
What?
Bioscience Careers is a truly interdepartmental endeavor to educate graduate students and postdoctoral fellows about career options. The student-initiated and organized series has hosted speakers representing many different scientific careers since it began in October 2000.
Why?
According to a 1997 report by the NSF, only a third of all PhD's in biological sciences have tenured or tenure-track positions in academia. However, graduate students have very little exposure to scientists working in careers outside of academic research. This seminar series is the only organized career development resource for biological scientists at the University of Washington.
Who?
Who is sponsoring the seminar series? The 2008-2009 series has been sponsored by Department of Anesthesiology,
Department of Biochemistry,
Department of Bioengineering,
Department of Genome Sciences,
Department of Global Health Center for AIDS and STD,
Department of Immunology,
Department of Medical Education & Biomedical Informatics,
Department of Microbiology,
Department of Pathology,
Department of Pharmacology,
Department of Physiology & Biophysics,
Department of Radiology,
The Graduate School Fund for Excellence & Innovation (GSFEI),
Molecular & Cellular Biology Training Program,
Neurobiology & Behavior Program,
Office of Research and Graduate Education, UW Medicine School of Medicine,
and Pharmacological Sciences Training Grant.
Who attends?
People representing over 30 departments and programs have attended the series. 69% of attendees are graduate students and 22% are post-docs.
