Electromagnetism III - Electrodynamics

Return to main homework page

Homework and recitations set 2 - homework due April 11

Homework
9.13 - R and T for normal incidence with nonzero permeability. Give the full derivation for normal incidence (as in Sec. 9.3.2)
9.14 - Show that reflected wave has same polarization as incident
9.17 - Apply Fresnel equations to diamond surface
9.16 - Fresnel equations for polarization perpendicular to plane of incidence
H2.1 - (Negative refractive index). Assume that a material has refractive index n = -1. (This hasn't been achieved yet but is possible in principle.) Show that this implies that a wave entering the material from air (vacuum) is refracted to the 'wrong' side of the surface normal. Show that rays emitted from a point on an object placed near to a thick slab of the material are focused to a point inside the slab. Then show that the slab, whose thickness is d, can act as a lens, forming a real image of the object the other side, and find the magnification. (See links on the Resources page.)

Examples class
9.15 - prove amplitude and phase relationships for wave at interface
9.37 - Total internal reflection and evanescent waves

Bonus
9.34 and 9.36 - light passing through a slab
