{"id":444,"date":"2017-07-18T19:34:47","date_gmt":"2017-07-18T19:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/?p=444"},"modified":"2017-08-17T23:51:32","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T23:51:32","slug":"western-diet-capitalist-diet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/western-diet-capitalist-diet\/","title":{"rendered":"Western Diet = Capitalist Diet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Western diet is an extension of our capitalist culture.\u00a0 We are told what to drive, where to live, what to buy, who to vote for and what\/how much to eat.\u00a0 We have allowed the Western diet to take root because of our desire for cheap, fast, processed foods that are easy to ingest.\u00a0 Over-consumption\u00a0is not just encouraged, it is designed.\u00a0 We are sold food that lacks all that our bodies need, so we feel the urge to keep eating\u2026and we do.\u00a0 Individuals do have a choice of what food to buy, but those choices can be limited due to geographic and economic conditions.\u00a0 To help level the playing field, collective action is needed.\u00a0 Government subsidies for corn and soy should be reduced or removed completely.\u00a0 Our policies need to address to the problem that real food is too expensive and processed foods are cheaper than they should be.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Pollan makes an observations in his book, <em>In Def<\/em><em style=\"font-size: 1rem\">ense of Food<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, that \u201c\u2026food no longer seems like the smartest place to economize.\u201d\u00a0 (161)\u00a0 Save $5 on lunch every day by eating fast food, then spend thousands in medical bills because of health problems.\u00a0 This is a regression that Americans have been channeled into unknowingly.\u00a0 The Western Diet is bad for our dental health\u2026but very good for the dental industry.\u00a0 It is bad for our physical health\u2026but very good for the health care industry.\u00a0 The Western Diet was designed so corporations could extract the maximum amount of money from each person.\u00a0 So our Western Diet is really just a capitalist diet\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-445\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\" src=\"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/apple-eating-square-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/apple-eating-square-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/apple-eating-square-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/apple-eating-square-176x176.jpg 176w, http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/apple-eating-square-60x60.jpg 60w, http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/apple-eating-square.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow Does Your Diet Affect Your Dental Health?\u201d\u00a0 BabylonDentalCare, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.babylondentalcare.com\/how-does-your-diet-affect-your-dental-health\/\">http:\/\/www.babylondentalcare.com\/how-does-your-diet-affect-your-dental-health\/<\/a>.\u00a0 Accessed 12 July 2017.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Western diet is an extension of our capitalist culture.\u00a0 We are told what to drive, where to live, what to buy, who to vote for and what\/how much to eat.\u00a0 We have allowed the Western diet to take root because of our desire for cheap, fast, processed foods that are easy to ingest.\u00a0 Over-consumption\u00a0is not just encouraged, it is&#8230;
