{"id":546,"date":"2018-04-15T03:54:44","date_gmt":"2018-04-15T03:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385s18\/?p=546"},"modified":"2018-04-16T20:01:30","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T20:01:30","slug":"are-we-going-to-ignore-that-nutritionism-is-like-kind-of-racist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385s18\/2018\/04\/15\/are-we-going-to-ignore-that-nutritionism-is-like-kind-of-racist\/","title":{"rendered":"Are we going to ignore that Nutritionism\u2122 is, like, kind of racist?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All I could say when I finished reading Michael Pollan&#8217;s <em>In Defense of Food<\/em> was:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 625px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-546-1\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/mPMqs4Z.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/mPMqs4Z.mp4\">https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/mPMqs4Z.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Okay, not <em>intentionally\u00a0<\/em>racist, but racist<em>\u00a0<\/em>in<em> impact<\/em>. As I put <del>pen-to-paper<\/del>\u00a0finger-to-keyboard and write this out, I fully understand that my statement probably will have many supporters of nutritionism up in arms about its validity. Though, I do not intend to throw the baby out with the bathwater: after all, Pollan is not saying anything <em>incorrect, <\/em>as<em>\u00a0<\/em>health does lie in understanding what we are putting into our bodies, and specific to my point, it is not as though Pollan wrote this book saying, &#8220;Yasss, f*ck ____ people!&#8221; However, I want to<i>\u00a0<\/i>critique the conversation he instigates, which leaves many black and brown communities at the door, exacerbating the economic burden ethnic minorities face in having few options to afford the foods that the privileged communities Pollan had in mind can easily charge to their Visa Diamond.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1076px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.foodrepublic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/oprah2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1066\" height=\"936\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">We stan Oprah, but the image of a strong, beautiful, absolute boss of a black woman with a cornucopia of fresh, vibrant vegetables is by no means a common sight in the United States. Maybe we need to create circumstances conducive to this being more commonplace? Source:\u00a0http:\/\/www.foodrepublic.com\/2018\/01\/09\/president-oprah-impact-food\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Growing up in a low-income household where the food in our pantry was from WinCo Foods and stacked in rows of four, the notion that we must eat &#8220;real food&#8221; our grandmas would recognize is troubling to many black and brown people who share the same experience: with how persistent generational poverty is with ethnic minorities, are we to ignore that our ancestors were just as poor, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/pi\/ses\/resources\/publications\/minorities.aspx\">same problems<\/a>? To not address the socioeconomic implications of nutritionism does nothing to alleviate economic circumstances for minority communities who would reap the most benefits from access to healthier foods. Economically privileged communities can afford healthcare <em>and<\/em> preventative measures, while we are stuck deciding between milk <em>or<\/em> bread.<\/p>\n<p>Despite nutritionism&#8217;s valid points, we cannot preach healthy living without making it cheaper.
