In this class, the basic concepts of mechanical and chemical pulping and bleaching will be presented. Topics to be covered include raw materials, pulping technologies (mechanical, kraft, sulfite, and others), and bleaching (chlorine, chlorine dioxide, oxygen, peroxides, ozone, etc). Particular emphasis will be placed on the equipment utilized, chemical processes, and chemical mechanisms. The class meets for a 50 minute lecture three days a week. Although this is a lecture class, a significant amount of class participation is encouraged. Although there are no prerequisites for this class, it is highly recommended that PSE 406 is taken before taking this class. This class will build off of many of the concepts taught in PSE 406. Homework For each lecture there will be an online homework assignment. These assignments will be multiple choice questions based on the lecture and the readings (yes both). Some of the online homeworks will be more intense as you will be required to complete a series of calculations. These online homeworks will be submitted through WebQ. Links will be in the assignment sections. These homework assignments will be worth 30% of the final grade. Exams There will be a total of 4 exams throughout the quarter plus a final. These exams will account for 70% of your final grade. The exam schedule and point totals may be viewed in the schedule page. Make-up examinations will be given only in cases of documented illness or emergency. Although there is no text book for this class, there are electronic readings for most of the lectures. Access to these readings is through the schedule page.
