Discussion Board - Posting Topics

Pick and Post Your Topic. Pick a topic in the area of human sexuality that is of great interest to you and that has enough breadth that you will be able to write a 10 page literature review paper and give a 90 minute presentation. After your topic has been approved by the professor and the class as a whole you will post it on the class discussion board
Catalyst - GoPost

Create a discussion space for your topic at GoPost. After you open the catalyst tool GoPost, select Manage; Discussion Area – Edit; + Add Discussion Area. Put your name and the topic title in the Area Name. In the Area Description indicate how you hope to address the topic so that your classmates will know the general direction you're planning to take the topic. Be sure to Save before you close the page.

Post comments on classmates' topics. After your classmates have posted their topics go to GoPost to the Board link, select their discussion area (labeled with their name), select new conversation and ask questions or make comments about their topic. This may give the author of the topic some ideas of what to include or directions to take in their research. Be sure to select post (or preview, post) before you leave the page.

Bibliographic Research - Finding Your Sources
Research your topic. Use all the resources the library has to offer to find material related to your topic. Academic journals and books are the best sources of information. Textbooks are good as sources of finding researchers who have written on your topic. Books in the popular press are useful only to determine what the general populace is reading. Additional research will be needed to determine whether the information in such books is accurate. Do not use web sites as a primary source of your information � you may use website only as a source of ideas of what subtopics you might include in your research. (Of course papers available on the web through the library web site are acceptable.). There will be a library research training session on MONDAY, OCTOBER 5TH during our regular class time. We will meet in the Instruction Lab on the 1st floor of OUGL.

Annotated bibliography:
1. You will use many articles for writing your paper and presentation. You will need to compile bibliographic information on all the articles you use related to your topic (Author(s), title, source, year, volume, start and end page numbers). However, for a total of 8 articles only you need to compile an annotated bibliography. For an example see:

2. Include in your annotated bibliography 2-4 facts/concepts you learned about your topic from each article. Do not pull these facts/concepts from the paper's abstract. Look in the body of the paper. If the facts come from the background, introduction, or discussion sections of the paper you will want to read the article that the author(s)' cite related to those facts or concepts.

3. Email your annotated bibliography to Prof. McDermott on each due date (Points: total of 16 points) at mcdermot@u.washington.edu
