What is a Bibliography? [also known as a Reference List or Source List]
A bibliography, sometimes referred to as "References", is an alphabetical list of citations to sources used to write a research paper. The sources may include books or journals and magazine articles. For this assignment, you will seek out two (2) web sites about Puget Sound.
Each citation listed in the Bibliography includes the title, author, and complete publication information, including the publishers name and the place and date of publication. Oceanography classes use the formatting style for the jounal 'Limnology and Oceanogrqaphy'. You can view that format here, on the bottom of this page.
What are the assignments?
Assignment 1. (Due Sunday October 1st at midnight)
- Create your UW web site and create a link within the web site that will take visitors to your Ocean442 class documents.
Assignment 2. (Due Thursday October 5th at 5pm)
- Create an annotated bibliography for two (2) web sites that contain scientific information about Puget Sound.
- When you have found your potneital web sites, email Rick. The course only allows duplicate references to the web sites, so if you are the third to find a site, you'll have to try to find another. Persons who work on this assignment right away have an easier time with it.
- Post the annotated bibliography to your web site and email Rick
What is an Annotated Bibliograpy?
Each citation in the Bibliography is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words or 4-6 sentences), descriptive and evaluative paragraph known as the annotation.
What is the purpose of an Annotated Bibliograpy?
The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
How do I create an Annotated Bibliograpy?
1. Locate books, articles, web sites, and newspapers on your topic . Briefly examine and review the items. Select those resources that provide the best information and variety of perspectives on your topic.
2. Write the reference citations. In the School of Oceanography, all references are to be in the format used by the journal 'Limnology and Oceanography'.
3. Finally, write a concise annotation (paragraph) that includes the following:
- Main focus or purpose of the source
- Intended audience of the source
- Usefulness or relevance to your research topic (or why it did not meet your research needs)
- Any omissions, weaknesses or suspected bias in the source
- Special features of the source: for example - statistics, illustrations, any special features, reference list
- Background and qualifications of the author
- Conclusions reached by the author
- Conclusions or observations reached by you
