The
Washington Rare Plant Care and Conservation Program is
dedicated to conserving Washington's native rare plants
through methods including ex situ conservation,
rare plant monitoring, research, reintroduction, and education.
Research
Summary Dr. Sarah Reichard
and her students are researching several rare plant species
at the Center for Urban Horticulture.
Ms.
Wendy Wayne studied the variability of seed germination
among sites of Castilleja levisecta (golden paintbrush)
and substrate treatments to facilitate successful restoration
of this species. She investigated seed stratification
and greenhouse techniques for raising healthy container
plants to supplement existing populations out in the field.
Castilleja levisecta
Graduate students examine haustorial root connections
of Castilleja levisecta.
The site is burned to prepare for seeding C. levisecta.
Seedling
establishment was very weak. Planting C. levisecta
with a host connection to Festuca roehmeri promoted
the best survivorship.
