Miller Seed Vault
Location: Rare Care office, Seattle, Washington
 
Seed Vault Assistant

Time: year-round, weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm (hours flexible)

Help Rare Care preserve seeds of rare plants for perpetuity. Seed vault assistants help with cleaning, counting and packaging seeds of rare native plants for long-term storage in the Miller Seed Vault. Volunteers work in the Miller Seed Vault processing room, a climate-controlled environment with an ambient temperature of 57 degrees F and a relative humidity of 22%. Working with seeds requires a strong attention to detail. You'll handle very small seeds with hand tools.

 

Propagation Assistant

Time: year-round, weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm (hours flexible)
Minimum commitment: 2 hours per week, 6 months minimum

Do you enjoy growing native plants? Propagation assistants work with Rare Care staff to conduct germination testing of seeds in the Miller Seed Vault. Activities include initiating and running germination tests, keeping weekly records on germination results, and potting and caring for seedlings. Dependability, accuracy and a background in horticulture are desirable.
