Paper Topics SECOND PAPER ASSIGNMENT Answer one of the following questions in an essay of 4-5 pages, typed and double-spaced. Make sure you support your argument with brief references or quotations from texts or lectures. Strive to be persuasive in your arguments and avoid unsubstantiated generalizations. For assistance with your papers, see your TA. The History Department Writing Lab, in Smith 210C can also help with drafts; appointment may be needed. You can stop by Smith Hall, or contact them at hwc@u.washington.edu or 543-5692. Papers are due at lecture on Tuesday, January 22. Late papers will receive a lower grade. QUESTION #1 What is the function of religion in Machiavelli's political thought? How and why is this different from Augustine's definition of the City of God and Man, and from Dante's presentation of the Church and the Empire in the Divine Comedy? Be sure to develop a sense of the historical context of each respective work, as well as a close reading of the texts. QUESTION #2 Renaissance writers and artists claimed to have rediscovered antiquity and, with it, the centrality of the individual. Classical Rome in particular was drawn on as a model of social, political, cultural and aesthetic identity. How was this model embodied in the life and work of Petrarch, Machiavelli and Renaissance artists such as Raphael and Michelangelo? | |
