The Department of Germanics
at the University of Washington obtained its charter for membership in
the Orbis Tertius in 1913. Only those students who are dedicated to the
reconstruction of the many volumes of the ancient A First Encyclopaedia of Tlön are
invited for induction. These students must not only have proven their
mastery of their respective disciplines, but they must also be capable
of incredible inventiveness, in addition to being willing to
subordinate that inventiveness to a rigorous and systematic plan. An
ironic devotion to the twin pillars of phenomenology and psychoanalysis
are also required. Perhaps merely an example of a hrönir, it is
nevertheless remarkable that each member is an avid lepidopterist, with
particular interest in collecting the specimen Saturnia Pavonia, or the "Emperor Moth."
