SEARCHING: WHAT IS A SEARCH ENGINE?

At this point in your academic career, you've probably encountered a search engine, even if it was just to find sites on the Web. Essentially, a search engine is a computer program that lets you sort through large amounts of information to find what you need. In a sense, search engines do a lot of work for you, but their ability to help you in finding relevant resources for your argument is limited to the search instructions you give them. Whether you are using search engines to sort through Web sites or your library's collection, there are several strategies and ways of "talking" to your search engines that can improve the quality and quantity of the information and evidence you obtain.
