Project 1 Data:

The data resulting from the M&M data collection project is included in an attached text file. In order to get this data into excel, use the following procedure:

1.  FIND M&M DATA:  The data is located in a text file called m-and-m.txt.  This file can be viewed by following the link in the previous sentence.  Follow the link to the m-and-m.txt, and then proceed to the next instruction.

2.  SAVE M&M DATA FILE LOCALLY:   While viewing the m-and-m.txt file, choose "save as" under the File menu.   Save the data file locally - on your machine, on a disk, etc.

3.  IMPORT THE M&M DATA INTO A SPREADSHEET: The next step is to import the m-and-m data into a spreadsheet package, such as Excel, for processing.  To do this, first open your spreadsheet program.  Then go to the file menu, and select "Open File."  Navigate until you find your file - m-and-m.txt and select it.  Because the file is a text file, not a spreadsheet file, you will be asked a series of questions about how the spreadsheet program should interpret the data.  What you need to know - the file is a delimited file and has been delimited using tab characters.

4.  SAVE M&M DATA AS SPREADSHEET:   The last step, before the beginning of the analysis, is to set up your spreadsheet program to save the file as a spreadsheet rather than as a text file.  In the spreadsheet program, under the file menu, choose "save as".  Enter a new name for your spreadsheet.  Under "file type", select the option that corresponds to your spreadsheet program (e.g., "Microsoft Excel Workbook" for Excel).

5.  EXPLORE M&M DATA:  You should now be set to complete your analysis.

Good luck and Have fun.
